United States: Donald Trump declared he would lead the federal government to renew operations at Alcatraz prison on its San Francisco Bay Island location after the facility had been closed for more than 60 years.
Trump Orders Revival of Alcatraz
According to Trump, as posted on his Truth Social site on Sunday evening, “For too long, America has been plagued by vicious, violent, and repeat Criminal Offenders, the dregs of society, who will never contribute anything other than Misery and Suffering. When we were a more serious Nation, in times past, we did not hesitate to lock up the most dangerous criminals and keep them far away from anyone they could harm. That’s the way it’s supposed to be.”
“That is why, today, I am directing the Bureau of Prisons, together with the Department of Justice, FBI, and Homeland Security, to reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt ALCATRAZ to house America’s most ruthless and violent Offenders,” he added.
Through his directive, Trump aims to revive the obsolete prison facility to support his nationwide efforts to transform federal imprisonment facilities.
Imagine prisoners, engineering an escape, swimming across the icy waters of the Bay, taking a look around San Francisco… and going back.

The transformation of Alcatraz into a functional prison will come at a considerable cost and prove extremely challenging, the Guardian reported.
The Island prison closed in 1963 because the high maintenance costs along with poor structure made it unfeasible to maintain its operation for the facility, which required everything from fuel to food delivered by boat.
Modernizing Alcatraz requires significant financial expenditure despite current Federal Bureau of Prisons decisions to close prisons due to infrastructure problems.
Tourism to the island has become significant because the National Park Service maintains the operation of the site, which received national historic landmark status designation.
Pelosi Pushes Back: “Not a Serious Proposal
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi from California brought doubts about the practicality of reactivating the prison as her California district includes this island.
“It is now a very popular national park and major tourist attraction. The President’s proposal is not a serious one,” she posted on X.
“The Rock” to Rise Again?
The notorious prison located offshore became famous by its nickname “the Rock” because strong currents and cold Pacific waters around it made any escape attempt practically impossible.
It detained prominent criminals such as Al Capone and George “Machine Gun” Kelly, as per the Guardian reports.
The FBI reports that throughout its 29-year operational period, 36 male prisoners tried to escape 14 different times.
All escape attempts led to the capture or the fatal outcome of the inmates.
Three prisoners named John and Clarence Anglin, together with Frank Morris, became the center of an ongoing discussion as their escaper story was turned into the 1979 film Escape from Alcatraz starring Clint Eastwood.
