DOJ Inspector General Accused of Targeting Political Foes

United States: There are rumors that some workers of the Justice Department’s Office of Inspector General( OIG) have a political prejudice against the subjects of their examinations, which has led to review of the agency.
Objective Oversight Under Scrutiny
The OIG states that its goal is to “detect and deter fraud, waste, abuse, and misconduct by conducting objective, independent, and impactful oversight of the Department, its programs, and the conduct of its personnel.”
Employees of the OIG are impartial and do not change in response to changes within the executive branch. The Senate confirmed Inspector General Michael Horowitz in 2012.
However, recent reports and records examined by Fox News Digital show that there appears to be partisan bias among some OIG staff members, particularly those in charge of supervising investigations of political appointees of the Trump administration.

Calls for Investigation
The DOJ received a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request from America First Legal (AFL) on Wednesday asking for an investigation into the “existence of politically motivated employees in positions that demand impartiality.”
“The Department’s Office of Inspector General itself describes that ‘[i]n light of today’s wide-spread lack of trust and negative views of government, a key facet of the Department’s challenge of strengthening public trust is ensuring that DOJ personnel fulfill their duties without any actual or perceived political influence or partisan consideration,’” according to the FOIA request.
“Despite this unambiguous obligation to avoid the appearance of political or partisan considerations, there is evidence that the Office of the Inspector General is deeply infected with partisan actors,” it states.
Partisan Ties Exposed
Documents obtained by Fox News Digital show that, since 2007, Deborah Falk Zerwitz, an attorney with the Office of Inspector General (OIG), has given $6,466 to Democrats or organizations associated with them 35 times.
Zerwitz is currently in charge of the OIG’s investigation of the department’s 2020 inquiry into fatalities that occurred in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey state-run nursing homes.
Zerwitz “liked” dozens of political posts on her X account, some of which were critical of Trump appointees and then-Attorney General Bill Barr. One such post suggested that all White House attorneys who draft executive orders ought to be “disbarred,” while another accused Barr of spreading the “myth of the unaccountable career prosecutor.”
Ongoing Concerns
She also seemed to have “liked” a another post that stated, “We need to fire Donald Trump, but that’s not enough. His Republican backers must be removed from office at all levels of government.
She also “liked” messages that included things like, “SO F— OFF,” “Attention QANON, MAGAT Fascists,” and references to “Trump and his racist homophobic cult members.” She also approved of a post that decried Sen. Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky, as “eroding our democracy.”
Between 2020 and 2022, Jennifer Ramella, an additional OIG lawyer looking into the DOJ’s nursing home death investigation, made 33 donations to the Democratic PAC ActBlue, totaling more than $300.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania’s investigation into complaints of possible problems with a few mail-in votes at the Luzerne County Board of Elections in 2020 was headed by Christina Monta, a former OIG attorney.
Monta, according to FEC data, made several contributions to ActBlue and Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s Senate campaign, totaling $1,014.50 between 2019 and 2020.
Defense of Constitutional Rights
In 2015, Monta represented a party in one of the initial lawsuits filed by the DOJ to permit biological men to use women’s restrooms. Around the same time, she also joined the DOJ’s challenge against Texas’ voter ID law.
“It is imperative that Americans learn whether these views persist within the Department of Justice, certainly meeting the Department’s standard that a ‘matter of widespread and exceptional media interest in which there exist possible questions about the government’s integrity that affect public confidence,’ especially as we approach a Presidential election,” the request for FOIA states.
“It is vital for our democracy and trust in government that those in government with duties to be impartial do not wield their power by targeting political opponents,” they stated.
“Consistent with the First Amendment, Citizens United, and federal law, the OIG respects the constitutional rights of its employees, and of all citizens,” an OIG representative told Fox News Digital.
